OPEN CALL: minciospace_ residency

minciospace_ is offering a residency and invites artists who are planning a stay in Vienna or who already live in Vienna and the surrounding area to apply for our RESIDENCY OPEN CALL focusing on music/sound art.

minciospace_ is a place for music, art development and collective exchange about a livable future for all, as well as a place aiming to explore the ways in which art can inspire social progress.

Rehearsals, live sessions, expert talks, workshops and creative dialogue between musicians and people from other areas of society take place in over 750 sq m of space.

From 1 October to 9 November 2025, minciospace_ will make its premises available for five days of residency to develop an artistic project, make creative use of the various spaces on site and expand one's own network. Part of the residency is the presentation of the developed piece/project at our Für/Sorge_ Showing #3 on 11 November 2025. The five residency days can be chosen freely within the residency period.

The residency can be structured freely: residents work, develop and rehearse autonomously in the rooms provided; the infrastructure of minciospace_ (rehearsal rooms, kitchen, WiFi, etc.) is available to residents at any time as required.

Annual theme: Für/Sorge (“care”)

“Für/Sorge” is about caring for ourselves, for others, and for the world we share while unlearning patriarchal patterns and reshaping existing structures. You can find more thoughts on the annual theme HERE.

As part of the OPEN CALL, we invite you to explore and shape your project around the diverse dimensions of the topic.

The Residency includes the following *

  • Zeitraum: 5 frei wählbare Tage im Zeitraum von 01. Oktober – 09. November 2025
  • work studios (180 - 200 sq m)

* Barrier-free residences can be arranged upon request.

The call for applications is aimed at musicians and sound artists from the independent scene. We would particularly like to invite people from different backgrounds and live-experiences to apply.  After SPINNERIN, Julia Lacherstorfer's first project that consciously focussed on female narratives, the versatile musician presents the transcultural music project NACHBARIN [a diverse narrative]. Lacherstorfer is always on the lookout for new perspectives and insights outside the usual bubbles and familiar filters.
"... that's exactly what interests me. What my neighbours experience, whether they live right next door to me or many kilometres away. Whether they have their roots here in Austria or elsewhere. Around a quarter of my Austrian neighbours have a migration background, and I want to learn from them instead of hearing about them."

The life stories made audible by Lacherstorfer tell of experiences such as mental illness, forced displacement or omnipresent everyday racism.

NACHBARIN [a diverse narrative] is a transcultural music project that translates different realities of life into music, using the technical means of dialogue interviews, composition, film and photography. Music can build so many bridges. It can comfort us and hold us. It can shake us awake and put its fingers in the open wounds so that we can finally feel where it hurts. Whether collectively or individually. Perspectives become broader, narratives become more diverse. And then change happens.

OHR AUF ZUNGE is not a dinner accompanied by music. The finger foods from Flora Geißelbrecht's kitchen that are served to the audience are nothing more and nothing less than culinarily encoded programme texts that allow you to immerse yourself a little deeper in the music.
Sensitive compositions by three solo musicians who know how to use their tonal palette of spices on the edges of jazz and contemporary music alike. In between, the three sound-chefs express their creativity in joint improvisations, for which it is then up to the audience to put their "ears to the tongue" and associate the culinary programme text. . .

Der Schurfix ist zurück – diesmal auch im minciospace_.
Offener Austausch, neue Impulse und Vernetzung für Musiker:innen.

On June 10, the vision of regular network meetings for Vienna musicians was brought back to life: „the Schurfix“. Follow-up events will take place in September and November – the latter will be held at minciospace_, which we’re particularly excited about.

The Schurfix is designed as a low-threshold meeting point for getting to know one another and for overcoming scene boundaries. At the same time, it aims to create a forum for ongoing exchange on current topics. Starting in autumn 2025, each evening will focus on a specific theme. For this purpose, individuals with particular experience and insight in the respective field will be invited to share their perspectives. Guided by the question “How do we feel?”, the June edition created space for exchange, reflection, and exploration of future topics. In September, we’ll be joined by guests such as Susanne Lontzen (AKM) and Markus Lidauer (SKE) to explore the question “Who Supports Us?”. The topic for November 12 will be decided at our next Schurfix.

In order to keep track of the ideas that arise - as in 2023 - little notebooks will be placed on every table to write down important thoughts and points arising in the course of conversations. Participants will receive a synopsis of these notes after each Schurfix, providing an overview of the issues that were discussed.

Für/Sorge_Showing:

On November 11th, the third minciospace_Showing will take place at minciospace_. In a cosy living room atmosphere, we will be presenting a diverse showcase of new projects that have been created in, with or around minciospace_ as part of the annual theme „Für/Sorge: Was brauchst du für ein Wir?“ Musicians from the minciospace_ working group and an artist in residence will address the theme of care (Fürsorge) in their very own way - solo or in ensemble - and present the results of their work during the course of the evening.

Thoughts on the annual theme:

Taking care of others is often easier for us than taking care of ourselves. For many of us, looking after our families or other members of the community is something we do automatically. However, when it comes to caring for ourselves, we often have not learnt to recognise our own needs, name them and set healthy boundaries. Yet, especially in stressful situations, it becomes clear how essential this ability is in order to keep our mental balance in equilibrium. If worries get out of hand, they quickly develop a life of their own and cause destructive chain reactions in the mind.

But care also has a gender: women* perform 70% more unpaid care work than men* and these outdated role assignment lead to lower pay and poverty in old age.

And yet care work is essential! In the face of multiple crises, we need to unlearn these patriarchal patterns, change structures and teach children - regardless of gender - how important it is to care for themselves and others. This is the only way we can do the necessary care work together for society and the planet.

Thanks to the City of Vienna's Department of Cultural Affairs, the BMWKMS, the 15th District - Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus and the SKE for supporting the project!

Soil and earth form the foundation for all life on our planet.
Without healthy soil, ecosystems as we know them cannot exist.
However, it is precisely this soil that is increasingly under threat – from intensive agricultural use, excessive use of pesticides and the progressive sealing of large areas. In urban areas in particular, this not only leads to the loss of fertile soil, but also to the creation of so-called heat islands. With devastating consequences.

‘SOIL – Songs from the Underground’ is centred around the topic of soil from an artistic perspective. It focuses on the impact of human activity on biodiversity and the complex but fascinating interaction of soil organisms. The project uses a variety of methods to demonstrate how essential healthy soils are for life on our planet – and aims to raise awareness on the need for mindful, sustainable use of this vital resource.

Five musicians from the minciospace_ Arbeitskreis formed an ensemble early in 2025 and have been working on SOIL ever since. Collaborating with biologist Susanne Kapelari, and in the future with other experts as well, enriches the artistic process with solid scientific facts that flow directly into the musicians' work.

Five musicians, five perspectives, five approaches that couldn't be more different. The first compositions will be presented for the first time in November as part of the Für/Sorge Showings at minciospace_. In the long term, the plan is to develop a joint stage programme and expand into new thematic areas.

Origin

SOIL originated from an initiative by biologist Susanne Kapelari, who initiated a project in 2023 as part of an EU funding application, with minciospace_ as a planned partner. Even though the original research project was not funded, this encounter led to the development of an independent artistic project – driven by the need to raise public awareness of the complex and often overlooked topic of soil.

„PUNK as F*CK: Die Szene aus FLINTA-Perspektive“
Herausgegeben von Diana Ringelsiep und Ronja Schwikowski
VÖ-Termin: 29.08.2022, Ventil Verlag
